Time-lapse. French Bean, Runner bean germinating underground.
This is an example of epigeal germination where the cotyledons are pulled above ground.

Epigeal germination
In this type of germination where the cotyledons come above the soil surface into air and light, due to rapid growth and elongation of hypocotyl. The cotyledons are green and make food to be used by stem during growing season. They finally dry off and seedlings become independent e.g. bean, gourd, castor, cotton etc.
See my time lapse of French bean as this shows an example of hypogeal germination.

Filmed by Neil Bromhall.
1 frame every 10 minutes over a period of four days.

  • The detail on this is amazing - a montage of different types of germination would be really useful for students of horticulture to study in time-lapse - has anyone approached you about doing it?
