This is a clip from "His Double Life," an entertaining romance based on a play and novel by Arnold Bennett.
THE STORY SO FAR: Roland Young stars as the painter Priam Farrel, who is phobic about meeting people and is unknown to all, including his own art dealer. When Farrel's valet Henry Leek dies suddenly, Farrel is taken for Leek. Farrel also inherits Leek's marriage agency correspondent, the loving, unflappable and unimaginative Alice Chalice (the always radiant Lillian Gish). After witnessing his own funeral at Westminster Abbey, Farrel suddenly realizes the enormity of his deception.
"His Double Life" was shot in Astoria, Long Island, and was directed by Broadway veteran Arthur Hopkins. The cinematographer was Arthur Edeson, well remembered for "All Quiet on the Western Front," "The Maltese Falcon" and "Casablanca."
No copyright claim.
Roland Young is pretty good in this, too. So is the novel it was taken from, Arnold Bennett's "Buried Alive."
