Updating the Xperia X10 to v2.1.1 (Update 1) & Rooting Using SuperOneClick

If you've updated to v2.1.1 (2.1-update 1 in "About"), z4root no longer works and you have to use SuperOneClick v1.5.5 or above.

You MUST have PC Companion installed or else your computer won't have the drivers to recognize the phone in USB Debugging mode.

Make sure you have User Account control disabled and "Run as Administrator" (right click).

Check "Unknown Sources" and "USB Debugging" (under Development) in Settings / Applications.

Rooting does NOT make the Market free nor does it unlock your phone. It allows you to run applications such as Titanium Backup, Barnacle WiFi tether, etc. as well as uninstall system applications like Moxier or install system applications such as the updated Gingerbread YouTube application: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EHQMDfRU4E

Flashing works on ANY X10. Download the appropriate firmware for your region. A = America, I = International.

All the firmwares are all listed on the XDA thread in the v2.3 video.

Run Update Service. It'll flash your X10 to the latest version.

2. If you can't figure out why a program that roots your phone doesn't work when your phone isn't plugged in, you shouldn't be using a smartphone.

@Mikehettfield Both of those programs are on other sites. The FlashTool homepage link goes to Github. SuperOneClick goes to shortfuse-org. They then use Uploaded-to and DepositFiles.
