The Washington-Centerville Public Library is honored to display this rare, donated facsimile edition of the Book of Kells, a world-famous 9th century illuminated manuscript. Study the art behind a book acclaimed to be the most beautiful book ever written and then visit the library each week to appreciate this magnificent book. One page of the book will be displayed each week, in the same way the pages of the original are displayed at Trinity College in Dublin to a half million people each year.

  • Thanks for the question! The original book was created more than 1,200 years ago and is permanently displayed at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. The book at Washington-Centerville Library is a facsimile created from the original in the 1990s and one of 1,480 others housed in public and private institutions around the world. It was purchased by the Fallang family and presented in memory of Dr. Orviel Fallang, a dedicated library patron.
