Before we read the main text (Luke 24:13-35), we really need to go back and look at two other texts from the gospels, Luke 9:10-17 (which is also found in Matthew 14:13-31; Mark 6:30-44; and John 6:1-14) and Matthew 15:32-39 (which is also found in Mark 8:1-10).

Please read all the passage listed, and then read Luke 24:13-35, before proceeding.

Notice that last part of the passage carefully, which says, "He was known to them in breaking of bread". He appeared to them as they went, but, He was not known to them in how He looked (by His physical appearance). And He spoke to them, but, He was not known to them by how He sounded (by the sound of His voice). And He expounded the Word of God to them, but, He was not known to them by His understanding of the scriptures (by the doctrine which He expounded to them). He was known to them only by what He did, when they saw Him break the loaves, in the same way He had done it in their presence in the past.

And that is the way we know Him today, by what He is doing in our lives that we recognize to be the same work that He has done in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Him in ages past, by His work and labor of love in our lives which is always the same and is always for our ultimate good. By the work of His Holy Spirit in us, which is our only strength, by which we withstand and stand, for it is His work and labor of love in our lives to enable us to do so according to our faith in Him. We know Him, as they knew Him on that road to Emmaus so many year ago, by what He has done and is still doing to this very day (the very same work) in the lives of all His people. For it is written "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." (Hebrews 13:8).

It was not in how He looked,
Nor was it in how He sounded,
Nor was it in what He taught,
But only by what He did,
That His dear children knew Him.
And that is how we know Him too.
By those things He does in our lives,
Which are always in line with scripture! Amen.
