While conducting research at the National University of Singapore on the snakes that live in mangroves, Dr. Bruce Jayne of the University of Cincinnati (Ohio, USA) captured this monstrous-looking mud lobster. This is a keystone species in mangroves because of the extensive excavations it makes. Despite the ecological importance of the digging of this species, its digging behavior has rarely been observed because these animals are so secretive.

mangrove lobsters, also known as mud lobsters (Thalassina anomala), an Ilocano delicacy whose mass of eggs are their most prized part. Ilocanos call the lobster ballasoy. Thalassina anomala's nocturnal burrowing is important for the recycling of nutrients in the mangrove ecosystem.
