Portions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) went to basic science research. It has injected money into a sector that was drying up and re-energized young researchers. Dr. Cam Patterson, cardiologist and director of cardiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine guided the research of Brooke Russell, a junior at Princeton University. She applied for a grant from the ARRA to spend two summers in the UNC McAllister Heart Institute's research lab under the direction of Dr. Patterson.
