it should be noted, as i have just found, that linux users need to run wireshark as root or will not be able to get started, as on step one of this tutorial, Capture->Interfaces, will give an error message if you are not using wireshark as root. good luck and happy learning!

When I start capturing packets with my IP address, its recording about 20,000 packets a minute when my browser isn't even open yet. Is this because another computer on my network is on the internet or what?
