Also, Always keep the gun unloaded until your ready to shoot.
If the gun is being stored, (for example: your elk rifle you use once a year) it needs to be stored unloaded and seperate from ammunition.
Understand the self defense gun in your nightstand is not being stored, that is there for work, and its no good to you if its not loaded. You can't exactly ask the murderer to hold on a second as you go downstairs and get your ammunition.

Just wondering :) I compete IPSC and USPSA and it is like second nature to me but at the same time it makes me uneasy at the range when somone mishandles their firearms.
Aren't you pointing your gun uprange??? You should be facing the other way.

I'm in a pistol pit with berms all around except behind the cameraman, but you are absolutely right: Firearms should be kept pointed downrange when uncased or unboxed. Bullseye pistol match rules have recently been changed to require empty chamber indicators inserted when cease fires are called.
