In part three of this landmark series from Norma Percy and the team that made the multi-award winning documentaries The Death of Yugoslavia and Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, contributors including Iran's President Khatami tell the inside story of the West's continuing nuclear confrontation with Iran. The film also shows a rare moment when they worked together.

US State Department insiders tell how, after 9/11, Iran played a key role in helping America to topple the Taliban in Afghanistan - only for President Bush to put Iran into his 'axis of evil' immediately afterwards. Jack Straw, then foreign secretary, and President Khatami describe how Iran offered to help the US and its allies in their war against Saddam Hussein - help that, given Iran's powerful contacts in Iraq and the West's subsequent difficulties there, might have made a crucial difference.

Jack Straw, his successor Margaret Beckett, and Joschka Fischer of Germany describe how they struggled to find a compromise between Iran and President Bush's hardliners over Iran's nuclear programme. John Sawers, currently our man at the UN, reveals an extraordinary secret deal that Iran proposed a few years later.

  • the Bush Neo-Cons wanted to bomb Iran from the start

  • @48alfaone Yes, much like the religious power used by American Christian fundamentalists and Israeli supremacists as cover for hegemonic greed. Iran could only have a bomb if it was a compliant supplicant of US power. I do agree with you though on the destructive power of religion. However, Iran has not attacked anyone in almost 300 years, and that speaks volumes. No western state has a record like that. Actions speak louder than words.

  • 2:11 is quite funny this guy is speaking of how Iran is funding arab millitants shooting at the ""free world"". Something that the UK government and there American masters have been doing against Iran amoung many other countries. Its disgusting.

  • @LazarusRemains Nationalism is every bit as destructive as the international corporate enterprise.

@Mandinko23 The U.N. is not just America's bitch. It's the bitch of every member on the security council.

  • LOL at how you hear violins shrieking the moment Ahmadinejad's

    face appears at 1:10.

  • It would be best if every country in the world dealt with it's own problems, treated it's own people with dignity, treated other countries with dignity, and stayed out of the affairs of others.

The reason this does not happen is largely because the business community wants everyone to trade, so that they can make a huge profit. Countries that defy them like Cuba & Iran are rare, as most countries have embraced deregulation. Many European countries seek a middle-way between state and business.

  • @scarwarsnow i soo agree with you, and the U.N. is Americas bitch or snitch u call it, they are the biggest hypocrite causing all the chaos in the world, while acting as a peace maker or keeper in disguise

  • Everything is a negotiation, its give & take, better to move forward not backward, this is what Government's like Bush's & Ahmadinejad's just don't understand. But, if Iran was based on peace, real freedoms, complete human rights, human law & science, it would have its nuclear power & bomb no problem! (Sadly Iran is based on religious power, and religious power is "always" dangerous & evil, Just Look Back At History, study)! Its 2011, Religion Is A Myth! Iran needs to become human, Period!

  • The fucking sad thing is that through Bush's childlike politics of "your're evil and we won't talk to you na na na na na" it drove Iranian politics to become MUCH more hardline than before. And I can completely understand it. How was the Iranian regime at the time supposed to convince its people that the US wasn't just trying to f*ck Iran over at every turn?

  • Ahmadinejad rigged the elections. That dictator is not the president of Iran.
