A New York Times investigation found that Wal-Mart paid bribes as it sought to build in the shadow of one of Mexico's most revered cultural landmarks, the pyramids of Teotihuacán.

This isn't about the controversy of the concept of bribery in Mexico, it's about a corporation that's trying to build a store near a historical land mark, which is obviously offending a lot of people and should therefore not be allowed.

No Wal-Mart at Teotihuacán. As a Mexican American I know this wrong.

I'm sure they'll just build another one somewhere else so they'll be fine.

More resigned than anything else, to be honest. I feel sorry for the simple, innocent retail merchants of Wal-Mart and their customers. But there's nothing I can do for them.

Not the U.S. media outlets at least because U.S. citizens don't give a shit about stories that don't directly involve American businesses or effect them, that's not the Mexican peoples fault so I don't know what your so pissed off about.

Yeah, tell me about it. The US was a superpower once too. Then they got corrupt, and look at Detroit now.

Oh, they'd complain all right - and for similar reasons. I've lived in DC. If they thought they could make more money by turning the reflecting pond into a water theme park, they would. The problem would be that every political interest group in the Beltway would be bitching up a storm - and holding both hands out for a payoff.

If it wasn't a US company like WalMart going to Mexico City, there wouldn't be a peep. You'd never hear a word about it.

They're building a Walmart .So what ! Mexico is so corrupt the gov. keeps all the oil and gas revenues .Mexico could be a superpower if the gov. wasn't so corrupt. As an mexican America I am heart broken to see what is happening in Mexico ... No to mention the war between those idiot cartels . We can't even travel there anymore.... So i think there more important issues than a new store opening up ... Walmart can open a store on the white house lawn as far as i care! good for them

They're building a fucking Wal-Mart next to a historical land mark, that's the real problem here. I'd like to see Wal-Mart try and build one of their stores right next to the Washington monument and not hear any Americans bitch about that.

No if a small ma and pa store tried opening up in the same spot they should protest its construction as well. As you can see no one else has tried to build in that spot, at least not to my knowledge, so that's why you've only heard about the complaints at this moment which might appear as "leftist" activity. I can assure that while most Mexicans do not directly identify themselves with right-winged parties, most do have conservative mindsets and values.

Bribe in Mexico ? Isn't that the minimum standard there? I mean that country isn't exactly the most law abiding place in North America. I mean when me and my family visited Mexico in the 80's and 90's .. We were always required to "tip" a cop just to cross into another neighborhood. I mean that's the norm down there... What is the big deal if this happened... heck there doing them a favor upgrading grocery stores and emplying people!
