From a traditional Victorian high street to a 1960s concrete jungle, to a modern shopping mall, Erith's town centre has had more than just a facelift as it aged. How do these changes impact on the community who live - and shop! - in Erith?

A short documentary made by young people from Trinity School in Bexley, as part as part of the Our Moving Histories: Bexley project produced by Chocolate Films in partnership with Bexley Local Studies and Archives Centre.

  • Erith does have a bad reputation, but the new town centre is much nicer than the old grey one that just looked like an extension of Thamesmead. Also the overall area I would say isn't as bad as it was or has been over the last 10 years. I've lived in Bexley borough nearly all my life, and with having spent 3 years of that in Erith I'm fairly happy here! It's also probably one of the cheapest places to live within Greater London if anyone was interested. :)

  • bring back Erith Market. I still miss it lots Nice simple market not like the one that they tried to make with them silly stalls that was to far apart

  • its a nice area just need more things to bring ppl together and something to kill chavs

  • @derry49 it aint...fml

  • looks like a nice little town

  • erith / north heath is a crap hole

  • EXCELLENT!!Very well done,a superb short documentary!I lived in Erith 1957-1965,I was a Sea Cadet taking part in parades like the ones filmed.I went to Erith Grammar School in Avenue Road.We used to buy things from Mitchells, the big store. The river was very polluted so we had to have injections at hospital if we fell in whilst boating, whereas now people go fishing today and the Riverside looks quite a nice environment.Yes,the shopping centre may have killed the human element of the communty.

  • Erith on Thames - got a ring to it . . . .

  • wicked

  • Great mini documentary! I have a copy of 'Bygone Bexley' where a lot of your footage came from, but where did you get the footage of the old Erith town centre and the swimming baths? I would love to get hold of a copy.
