= 'In the wonderful month of May'
-------------------------------------------------------------
Gustav Merkel (1827-1885) studied piano with Schumann's father in law, Friedrich Wieck, but was primarily known as an organist, and much of his music is for the organ. He spent most of his career in Dresden, where, though a Lutheran, he became organist at the Catholic Hofkirche. This attractive piece reminds me of the shorter works of Neils Gade - both composers being greatly influenced by Schumann. I think it stands comparison with Merkel's best known piano piece: 'Schmetterling'. Uploading this video on a damp January day, I certainly wish it was May!
