michael phelps is awesome, i'm not gonna lie, but i just feel like he's taking a lot of attention away from the other amazing olympic swimmers who deserve some credit, too. and yea, he's already made swimming much more popular than it has ever been in the US (although many non-swimmers are big fans...)

Phelps deserves the attention! It will help all swimmers in time. It already has! Peirsol was on Connan and Coughlin was on Leno. They got those gigs on their own! No worries. Our other stars will get their due...

ehhh i definenely dont think nike needs to get much more into swimming

i work at a swimming store and im just not a big fan of nikes products

i like phelps

but you have to remember when spitz set his 7 gold medal record there wasnt a 50 meter free which was one of his best events

I don't know how much viewership will go up for swimming events but I think it's really making people more aware of swimming and how necessary it is to learn just for safety reasons.

On a side note I think it'd good for kids to see someone like this and look up to him - a person who works hard to meet their goals - rather than phony Hollywood types they might normally admire. He offers something to them that they can apply to their own lives which I think is more useful.

I can't speak for Michael's effect on all of swimming but I can say that in and around my neighborhood I have never seen so many advertisments for swimming lessons and everyone of them is booked. I think that was Michael's goal and he acheived it...He'll be great on SNL.

the phelps effect is AWESOME and will definitely elevate the sport of swimming nike replacing speedo wouldnt be a bad thing it would help swimming become more maninstream i cant wait 2 see michael host snl ima huge phelps phan by the way

Would also be nice to see Nike with it's resources pull themselves together and match Speedo's development effort and produce their own fabric. They've got 4 years!

I never knew about the possibility of Nike replacing Speedo until I heard it here and my opinion of it is that the change would be an improvement. The better payoff considered, Speedo only manufactors products for swimmers but Nike makes products for multiple sports and thus a deal with them will help Michael appeal to a wider audience. Oh, and did you hear about the Oprah episode? Apparently over 150 Olympic award-winning athletes will be on her season premiere, and Michael will be one of them!
