Vespasian can say what he wants but I believe that these men did not die in vain, and they only went with charlie to get the rights every human is given. S
@jockhamish all the scots left with any fight left in em ended up in america...im clan leslie and my clan fight on both sides of the 1745. i have a hunch that the ones that faught on the jacobite side and survived ended up in the US. my clan has both lands in lowlands and in highlands n i love my highland roots ALBA GU BRATH!
It was over in 30 minutes, an unnecessary war for one mans ambition that would been better laid to rest before it even started, destroyed many peoples lives in the Highlands and made it what it is today, an empty sparsely populated territory, it wasn't even Scots v English as some would like to portray it, its a Civil war between Scots and English supporting Hanoverian Protestants V Stuart Catholics , BPC only made one more visit incognito St Mary le Strand Church London to be a Protestant.
A very realistic portrayal of the battle and well done director......the ancestors of those men who died on that tragic day can be seen if you look into the Scottish bagpipe music sites from Oregon in the USA...thats where the Highlanders are now..... because there are not many left in Scotland........
@stevom31 What nonsense. You can hardly sum up English culture by refering to Morris dancing alone. What about music, art, literature, sport, food, drink etc? I wasn't aware your culture was under any type of threat at all, it appears vibrant & well established, leaving the Union will have no effect other than dire economic consequences. Class system? lol All societies have a class system in one form or another, Scotland has had one for centuries, or did the English force Lairds on you?! lol
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH ok granted england has culture but noone wants to know it theres no international morris dancing association..many good writers yes but your govt is destroying what culture u have and soon it will be a mixed bag and will be lost in a soup of obscurity thx to immigration but u dont mind do u?scotlands culture will never be lost but we still seek to protect our identity thats the main reason for leaving the union we dont want a class system u do.scotland will flourish no probs
@notenglishandproud The problem with the Jacobite period is that over the years, the TRUTH as been obscured by romantic nonsense in many instances. Look at Grant, who betrayed his loyal Clansmen by leading them into a trap at Fort Augustus. He told them a pardon awaited those who marched in, swore an oath of allegiance & laid down their arms. They marched straight into captivity. Grant meanwhile was pardoned by the Crown & rewarded with land. Treacherous duplicity-a common theme in Scots history
@notenglishandproud You are extremely ignorant to assume that I somehow despise the Highland Scots, and those who fought at Culloden, simply because I am English. The whole affair was tragic and regretable, no British Army Regt has 'Culloden' as a battle honour on it's colours. One man's arrogance, ambition & self-interest, namly BPC, led the Highlanders to disaster. Any man with the courage to charge into massed musket fire, is a brave man, and certainly worthy of respect.
@stevom31 Evidently you are no student of history, or anything else for that matter. "You've laid the planet waste not just to Scotland (usual Celtic victim syndrome) but the irony is that England has NO CULTURE!" What a ridiculous, crass statement. For a country that 'laid waste to the planet,' how strange that we have a huge Commonwealth, membership of which is entirely VOLUNTARY. Clearly many nations would totally disagree with your point. Scots played no role in Empire building then? Idiot!

Filmed on Lauder Moor in the Scottish Borders for The National Trust for Scotland. The whole film can be seen at The Culloden Battle Field Site.
Lauder is as desolate as Culloden was 270 years ago. There are no housing estates next to it !!!!!!!
