They're the most educated of all generations so far and are described as tech savvy, adaptable and efficient multi-taskers.

But despite their capabilities, Generation Y are still living with their parents well into their thirties in what is known as "The Kipper Phenomenon".

Maria Tan takes a closer look to find out why.

  • Whoa...take it easy. There are a few points worth examining from the video, namely housing affordability and rental prices being at an all time high at about 7 or 8 times the average annual income. At the time this report was made over 50% of those Gen Ys still living with their parents were full time students who combine work with study. There is a lot more to consider before making judgements, and we also happen to be in a global economic recession.

  • Message to Kevin Rudd, we have a housing crisis why are you driving demand for housing further by increased immigration, how is it that you work all your life and can never afford to own a home. Kevin quit now before you totally destroy the lucky country.

  • We are coming, when you are too old to take care of yourself, remember, we are the nurses and doctors, carers etc mwhahaha stiff shit dickhead

  • So these spoiled brats can't make it on their own? Well Boo-fucking-Hoo!

When times were tough, I worked 2 jobs to support my family.

These fucking wimps are afraid to get their hands dirty. These spoiled brats should be kicked out and made to grow up. Fucking whiny wimps!

  • Well done, Maria. The biggest cause of housing problems come from the existence of State governments. They use real estate as a soft target for taxation, forcing rents and prices up. Abolishing state governments would help this. Beyond Federation is an organisation lobbying the feds for a referendum to achieve that very aim.
