This locomotive crane, built in 1947, is being moved (with the boom removed) over the highways to the South Carolina Railroad Museum's rebuilt track. It weighs 108 tons and the mover has placed steel bridge reinforcement pieces (yellow) on a concrete bridge to spread the weight of the locomotive crane. The crane is on 64 wheels and is being pulled by one highway trctor and purhse by another.

  • The Locomotive Crane is the most significant piece in the Museum's collection since it was once used on the original Rockton & Rion Railway. We plan to rebuild the crane and return it to service for track work, general lifting, and to include it in a living history display.

  • Good post. Will this be a part of the Rockton & Rion Railroad?

  • I was wondering how they got that crane over the bridge. Thanks and good luck with the restoration.
