The Hoop Loop antenna was designed by Jim, KR1S, using a 23" embroidery hoop from JoAnn Fabrics. Design details may be found at http://kr1s.kearman.com/html/hooploop.html . The radio used in this demo is a Tecsun PL-380 ultralight radio. Only radios which use the Silicon Labs Si4734 IC (or similar) will work with this setup as it is. My design is slightly different from Jim's. I used a FT240-61 type ferrite core with 5 bifilar windings on the primary and 50 regular windings on the secondary for a 1:5 turns ratio. The primary measured 19uH and the secondary measured 437uH. The middle of the bifilar primary winding is grounded to the aluminum box. I used the aluminum box to make sure the coil didn't pick up a lot of stray RF which would degrade nulls. The turntable is from Target and cost ~ $5. The embroidery hoop was $6 and the clock mount which the Hoop Loop is mounted was $5 from Michael's.

Stations used in the example were: 600 KCOL Ft. Collins, CO (distance ~50 miles); 610 KCSR Chadron, NE (~170 miles); 730 KLOE Goodland, KS (~130 miles); 740 KXXX Colorado Springs, CO (~100 miles); 790 KXXX Colby, KS (~150 miles); 540 WPDI548 (Denver Int'l Airport 10 watts) (~30 miles); 1260 WQKK262 (Denver 10 watts) (~30 miles); 1600 KEPN Lakewood, CO (~30 miles). Reception was at midday around 1:00PM on May 30, 2010.

  • Can you make this also via extern antenna input on the portable ? homatts turns you using on the FT140-61 primary and secondary .And what about a greather diameter .,letts say 1 meter .Thanks in advance Gr. from Belgium 73 ,Maurits

  • @antennebuis Yes, the transformer will either require a different turns ratio to match the impedance to the external antenna input or an additional transformer. A larger loop such as 1 meter in diameter will require either a different turns ratio on the transformer or less turns on the loop head or both. I will be offering similar loops for sale which custom-matching and inductive signal coupling sometime early next year (hopefully). 73, Chris.

  • Nice demonstration, cool loop.

  • @semoranman Thanks for you answer ,try it out one of this days

  • Great job, I love your set-up. I am newly engrossed in the world of Tecsun radios and DXing. Awesome!!

  • hi good video .. check out my usa receptions here in scotland uk using a indoor antenna

    HI

No most stations are on all night on the AM Band.

However SW stations do turn off.

It can be hard after 7PM to pick up the local BBC stuff here as these seem to get over power from Spansish stations.

I have some band scan videos if you want to have a look at them on my channel.

  • @ClactonRadio I thought many MW stations in Europe signed off at some time. Here in the U.S. there may not be many stations in comparison but they are on 24/7.

  • @mia0899cs

A good aerial but the band seems qute dead in the US.

Here in East Anglia most Frequencies have around two stations and at night time its mayhem on MW.

  • That was really awesome and interesting Chris!
