This was done over the last few weeks with some friends on our SMP server. It was our first large scale project. It is 189 blocks long, 156 blocks wide, and 47 blocks tall.
"The Colosseum is roughly elliptical in shape, with its long axis, oriented WSW-ESE, which measures 188m and the short one 156m."
We learned that anything as tall, or taller, needs to be sunk below sea level.

Instead of using lions on the gladiators we use creepers.
