The Swiss Guard is one of the most exclusive military units in the world. The Pope's army. They've been here in the Vatican in one way or another since they were first employed by Pope Julius II in 1506. This tradition runs deep. There are currently 110 men serving. Most are carrying out their 25 month service. They serve at posts throughout the Vatican, at gates and also within the Pope's residence. They are anywhere the Pope is really, including Castel Gandolfo at the moment. In all cases, they are carrying out a service for their pope. Not only is the service geared to work, their formation also extends to the interior life.
