I'm unsure but i heard it is a ceremonial scene of a poor scholar who become passed the imperial exams and became a official and who thanked his faithful wife who stood by him thick and thin.
This scene reflected the traditional confucian concept of virtuos wife, meritocracy..which later adapted to be the ceremonial starting espisode for Teochew opera.
