Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, investigative reporters and co-authors of the book "Game of Shadows," discuss Barry Bonds, steroids, and the current state of professional baseball.

-----

"Beyond BALCO" with Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams. Marty Lurie moderates.

With the weight of a prison sentence off their shoulders, Fainaru-Wada and Williams open up about their role in the BALCO steroid case that rocked pro sports. They also discuss the balance between California's shield law and the public's right to know, and the state of performance-enhancing drugs in sports. -- The Commonwealth Club of California

Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams are reporters for the San Francisco Chronicle and co-authors of the book "Game of Shadows," which chronicles baseball slugger Barry Bonds' alleged steroid use.

On May 5, 2006, Fainaru-Wada and Williams were subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury about how they obtained Bonds' leaked grand jury testimony. On May 31, the authors urged United States District Judge Martin Jenkins of San Francisco to excuse them from testifying. This appeal was supported by affidavits from Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Mark Corallo, a former press secretary to former Attorney General John Ashcroft, but was denied on August 15, 2006.

On Sept 21, 2006, the journalists were sentenced to 18 months in prison for contempt of court. The two have repeatedly stated that they would go to prison before revealing their sources. The two avoided jail time, however, when attorney Troy Ellerman pleaded guilty on Feb. 14, 2007, to leaking the information, lying to prosecutors, obstructing justice and disobeying a court order not to disclose grand jury information.

  • Isn't it "the pot calling the kettle black" for these two nebbishes to be pointing a finger of shame at Bonds, BALCO, and MLB while they themselves obtained ILLEGALLY DISCLOSED court documents to write this book and profit off of it?(Sounds quite corrupt, too) I mean, if someone, in their own opinion, wants to say Barry did something illegal, fine, but what about these guys, too?

  • what are his crimes? he committed no murder or theft . all he did is trying to be the best in the game. its just happened they framed him. if they would have framed someone else, the test would have been positive too

  • look at your id. you obviously are an American nationalist. and for some reasons many americans (not all) believe in fair game while i have not seen many fair games by them... its a weird thing that a country with best bodybuilders doesnt allow steroids. then how did they become best bodybuilders? vitamin b and protein shake?

  • he lied because its a whole system of hypocrisy. as long as you lie you stay in game. nobody should ever question athletes regarding steroids

  • who said others in team do not use roids? sports for fun do not include roids, but competitive sports cant be clean. since steroids exist, they will be used. and, just to make it easier on everyone, roids should not be in WADA book. or WADA should not exist. no world record is clean

  • If you work out for fun and like taking roids, go ahead, enjoy your self. If you are in team where you compete with no roids users, then the roids give you an unfair advantage. Its like you and me boxing. I fight with only my shorts and gloves, but you are wearing brass nuckels and padding.

  • They have a pile of evidence that OJ is guilty. Just happened that they framed a guilty man.

  • whats that nonsense? steroids are used by most if not all competing athletes in different sports! enough lies! just allow steroids and many other medicines that help people and athletes instead of shouting that its evil. its one's choice. i take roids. and valium and moprphine when i need to. legality doesnt bother me. enough comformity and idiocy. if alcohol is allowed and if cigarettes are, then why not roids or valium?

  • it's not about steroids well it is sort of the point is that he lied in court if he admitted to taking steroids there would be far less consequences than lying

  • The problem is that ML test steroids use through urine test but HGH can only be discovered through a blood test. That is why Barry has never tested positive for steroids. Geee people, its ML fault for not updating there testing policies ...
