Filmed between 1997 and 2001 by Pear Shaped Productions, this video contrasts the operations and rolling stock on two of the UK's premier main railway lines traversing Northern England.

(c) Pear Shaped Productions 1997-2011

At the time in the stewardship of Railtrack, the railways are filmed at highly scenic locations such as Penrith, Carlisle, Kendal, Northallerton, South Otterington, Ferryhill, Bradbury, Durham City, Metal Bridge, Croxdale, Brafferton and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Ten years is a long time in railways and this footage will be a nostalgic reminder of locomotives, rail authorities and train operating companies (TOCs) that have come and gone.

These include MTL's Northern Spirit, Great North Eastern Railway (GNER), North West Trains, First North Western, and of course the very much missed and lamented Royal Mail Trains.

Locomotive Classes on display include diesel electric 37, 47, 56, 66 and 6, electric class 87, diesel electric multiple units 142 (Pacer), 143 (HST), the new-at-the-time Virgin Voyagers,150 (Sprinter), 156 (Super Sprinter), 158 (Super Sprinter) and Royal Mail Class 325 DMU.

Freight companies EWS and Freighliner are featured, as is an appearance by the Aggreko weed-killing train departing from the West Coast Main Line junction at Oxenholme for work over the Windermere single-track branch line.

  • Very well put together video there brings back many happy memories of the WCML with proper trains ruling the roost. And the Enya soundtrack certainly evokes those memories and the sad present day situ on the WCML. Long live 87's 87006.
