Teen unemployment is at an all-time high in the United States. With one in four teens unable to find work, they are among the hardest hit by the recession.

With the help of the Department of Energy and the White House, the Office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was able to give Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) money to different organizations within the Los Angeles area that employ youth.

Programs like Anahuak Youth Soccer Association and the Green Ambassador program trained teens in energy efficiency and water conservation. These kids in turn taught their communities how to save energy and conserve water, which helped their neighbors save money and helped the DWP meet its energy efficiency goals.
