A skeletal open bite is when the front teeth are unable to bite together because the jaws have grown in a diverging pattern. Typically only the furthest back molars touch. This causes wear on the molars, potential TMJ problems, and an inability to incise food properly. In cases of a signicant open bite, often a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery is needed to predictably correct the bite.
