In Gnome 3 fallback mode you can have something a little familiar.

Basic configuring of Gnome 3 Fallback Mode -applets, panels etc

Install

"compiz" "compiz-gnome" "compiz-manager" "compiz-plugins main" to get things started.

if you want you can add the "compizconfig settings manager" and some extra compiz fusion plugins.

  • (Does that mean that when Fedora 17 comes out--with GNOME 3 fallback including what we consider "GNOME shell" being facilitated by the llvmpipe driver where regular 3D acceleratinoe fails or is otherwise unavailable--this will work the same way?

Sorry if I'm asking what's been asked already; and, for the record--I'm one of those people that wishes more people would step up to what potential a new paradigm offers, rather than hold everyone back to what they're already used to..)

  • @RobIncAMDSPhD not to sure about that,I have read that Gnome shell been having a lot issues with proprietary ATI divers, and may be dropping the fall back mode, so hopefully the driver issue gets sorted out,There are people porting stuff over to the GTK3 gnome panel so maybe there will be some thing to fall back on after all, I like Gnome3/shell and unity but I would like to have the traditional desktop as an option tho,,i guess time will tell after the shift is over..

  • Just curious to know if anyone came across a gnome-tweal plugin to disable the bottom panel in gnome 3 mode not fallsafe or classic mode? thx

  • @ussnooky sorry did not get back to you soon did not see the comment.what distro are you running the only Gnome shell distro with a bottom panel that i know about is mint and kororaa. i think you just need to disable the MGSE bottom panel, but if you are trying to auto hide it i dont think there is a option for that yet,I've have only seen and auto hide ext. for the top panel.

  • @MrMassivemanmeat I'm using fedora 16 and I want to get rid of the bottom notification panel as well as the removable devices notification!

it's not the MGSE but native gnome shell! :-) Thank you

  • @ussnooky i dont know if you can,,you can edit your theme to have full transparency at the bottom iv done this on some of my themes but it takes a little work tho. but i dont think that's what you are look for,,there might be an ext. to move the notification to the top. panel.
