I decided to finish an animation project I started a long time ago: recreating Pirate Jenny from the Judy Collins cover of the song from "The Threepenny Opera" by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. It turned out even better than I expected. I was able to put in a bunch of animation touches I wished I could have done back in 1970, when I first had the notion and created the drawings.

  • That's wonderful! Are these the same original illustrations you used for the college video?

  • @vatua - Yes, dear, I worked from jpegs of the old, original art which Richard scanned. The art is very carefully preserved in our files at Warp Graphics.

  • Awesome Illustrations! I've been fascinated by this song since I was a child; Your beautiful and detailed art adds new dimensions to the lyrics that I never had imagined before!

  • @LilNiceWolf - Thanks so much. I produced this in a college class as a music video (VIDEO TAPE! The spanking new wonder of the age!) back in 1970. That tape is long disintegrated, but here it is recreated with a few fun IMovie tweaks. Just a little revenge fantasy from a somewhat twisted 19 year old. LOL

  • this is GREAT!

Lotte Lenya did not sing in the French version of the movie:

  • I remember that I first thought it was you, Madam Masque, who was singing. Mostly because I heard your voice in a few inteviews.

I got so dissapointed when I found out it wasn't the case. Still, Love the drawings, and I can't help but see your Jenny as a great Rayek-Winnowill hybrid.

    :-)

  • Great job. I was moved by the song and the implications of it in the German version of the movie "The Three Penny Opera", but, not speaking German I was relying on subtitles. I came to Judy's version second hand and love it, although the lyrics and anger were watered down. Your Illustrations bring back much of the pathos, indignation and frustration from the movie version of the song.

  • I had all of Judy Collins albums in 1969 in Viet Nam, I loved this song. To close off the evenings we would listen to "Who Knows Where The Time Goes"

  • Fabulous! I've always loved this song, and your animation goes with it perfectly.

  • Wow ! I lose my breath when i watch your illustrations. My much adored Judy Collins and your fine Art - well, very impressing !

  • Wow Wendy! Simply beautiful, perfect match of image and song. You never cease to amaze me. You know, Stormbringer could be done this way, too!
