And it's not like we forbid people to speak french or any other language on our territory. But in our borders Dutch is the official language for official stuff, there's nothing unconstitutional about that.
You fail to make a point, since you're comparing two things which are incomparable. The federal entities within Belgium don't equal the status of indepedent countries so they shouldn't be compared to independent countries like Morocco. My point is the following: I do accept that in Flanders the official language is Dutch. However, the Constitution grants the francophone majority in 6 suburbs of the Brussels periphery the right to use French in public matters.
But over the last years the Flemish Government has started this anti-francophone witch hunt in the 6 "facility communes" by promulgating all kinds of petty rules aimed at reducing their constitutional right to use French to an absolute minimum. Because the francophones are sick of this constant narrow-minded bullying they now ask the adherence of their suburbs to the bilingual capital. If the Flemish Government stopped to make their lives difficult they wouldn't mind living in Flanders.
'anti-francophone witch hunt',that's just plain silly and untrue, blowing things totally out of proportion and accusing the flemish of all sorts of nasty things is just low and unfortunately a popular strategy. The facilities are still there as far as I know. And by the 'bullying' I guess you mean the 'omzendbrieven',but if you're even a little bilingual this shouldn't be cause of much inconvenience.Without 'omzendbrieven' Francophone parties would still be demanding expansion of Brussels,no doubt.
It is a fact that the official Flemish policy is to make the use of the French facilities virtually impossible. In theory the facilities still excist, but in reality the circular letters have turned them into an empty box. The inconvenient truth is that this is bullying. Maybe you think it's blown out of proportion, but how would you feel if you lived in a region were the local government seizes every opportunity to complicate your constitutional rights as much as possible? Do you see my point?
All I see is deeply rooted contempt and an unwillingness to show even a little respect for our hospitality and identity. And this discussion is too nuanced for this place, maybe we should just follow youtube etiquette and resort to insulting each other cuz this could go on forever...
And all I see is a deeply rooted bitterness for an unresolved past. Flemings should learn that a francophone facility commune resident who prefers to do his official paperwork in French doesn't despise Flemish identity. It's just easier to do your paperwork in your mothertongue. So if the Constitution gives you the option why shouldn't you make use of it? Flemish "hospitality" ? Allowing Belgian citizens to live where they want in their own country is no hospitality, it's only natural ;-)
People make the life of one other more bitter because there's no national feeling. Belgium is only kept straigth by propaganda and laissez-faire mentality. Belgium is the prolongement of the Spanish Netherlands based on a slave mentality.
It's the state that prevents Flemish to be Dutch and Walloon to be French, and people keep going without being attached to one another except for the fact they're Europeans.
People keep going because life is relaxed. Good for you, Brusseleer (Belgian).
