Well, it's been over a year since my last upload. I've wanted to record some new clips for a while, but just haven't made the time to do it until last Sunday morning. Before heading out for the day, I felt compelled to play a few tunes. This is my version of Ridge Road Gravel, based upon the Blake and Rice recording. Cross-picking is not easy - and I clearly need to clean up my technique. Furthermore, I decided to try to sing this one. I've never been comfortable singing, but I decided I needed to break the ice and just do it. I again used a Canon Powershot to record the clip - no external mics. The guitar is my '99 Santa Cruz OM.

  • Thanks for sharing...Great job on one of my favorite Blake songs.

  • @planezane Thanks for your comment!

  • Excellent! Great singing! You have the right "feel"in your voice for this song. Thanks for posting!

  • @fetteclan Thank you!

It's also interesting how you crosspick using the "drag method" (up,up, down, or down, down,up). I used to do that too until I went to a workshop with Steve Kaufman and he talked me into the "sweep" (always down, up, down, up) style. Now it's an ingrained habit. The drag style gives your fills/solos a real interesting quality.

  • @fetteclan Yeah, I never learned how to crosspick correctly. Pretty sure that's the reason I can't ever get Norman Blake tunes to sound right. Oh well. I would love to attend one of Kaufman's workshops. I have a video of Steve and a group of his flatpicking friends trading off licks on some standard fiddle tunes. Great stuff.

  • Hey man, great post. I've been looking for this tune; do you reckon you could post the chords? I have trouble with that chorus. Thanks again.
