This is a slide show made with photographs of Maria Callas as Cherubini's Medea, one of her greatest roles. The photos are from Alexis Minotis's production, performed in Dallas (1958), London (1959), Epidaurus (1961) and Milan (1961 & 1962), where Jon Vickers was Giasone. The sound-track is from the studio recording made in 1957, with the Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, directed by Tullio Serafin. Giasone is sung by Mirto Picchi. The pictures were chosen according to the text sung. If you like it, search for my other videos. This is Medea's entrance on act I. A guard commander announces to the King Creonte that a strange veiled woman is at the palace gates. When she enters and Creonte asks her "Chi sei tu?" (Who are you?), she unveils herself and answers: "Io? Medea!" The Argonauts want to chase her away immediately, but the chorus prefers to fly, for to stay there means disaster.

  • ... ma non ci sono filmati della Medea?

  • Sfortunatamente no. Solo qualche secondo (senza audio) alla Scala (in scena e ringraziando) e a Dallas (ringraziamenti alla fine degli atti secondo e terzo).

  • Not only did Callas change the timbre of her voice for each role she sang. She would change her posture, gestures and manner of walking. Notice here over a wide range of years and productions this unique use of hands and arms for this role.

  • Brava Callas!!!

    Bravo Luis!

  • Thanks for upload, indeed

  • Mr. Moschini, you have done this very beautifully! I'm sure Callas would have appreciated it, had she been alive :)

  • Maria was in full furty at Bing at the Met and I am sure wanted to do him some physical harm so she sang Medea in Dallas with full fury and in wonderful voice--brava diva.

  • Medea was a total triumph each time she sang the role. Her Norma, Lucia, Tosca and Traviata are excellent but there's something especially terrific about her Medea. Most seem to point out it's because it concerns classical Greek drama and Callas was greek - and dramatic.

  • Thank you so much.

  • Un omaggio perfetto per esaltare superbamente l'Arte di Maria Callas. Grazie!
