Greg Smith tosses warm up pitches between innings during a July 2007 Pacific Coast League game versus the Fresno Grizzlies. Smith, pitching for the Tucson Sidewinders in the clip, went 4-2 with a 3.78 earned run average in 10 starts with the Triple-A club. He began the season with the Double-A Mobile Bay Bears of the Southern League and registered a 5-3 record with a 3.36 earned run average over 12 starts. He struck out 62 batters in 69 and 2/3 innings. Smith was traded to the Oakland Athletics by the Arizona Diamondbacks along with outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, outfielder Aaron Cunningham, first baseman Chris Carter and pitchers Brett Anderson and Dana Eveland in exchange for All-Star hurler Danny Haren and pitcher Connor Robertson. Smith is a finesse southpaw with a high-80s fastball, but has a solid curveball and changeup. Smith was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the sixth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of Louisiana State University.

Fastball, curve, change. He's your typical soft-tossing lefty. His fastball rarely hits 90 and will usually be in the high 80s. This year with the A's his changeup has emerged as his best pitch. But he's also a chronic nippler. Patient teams just hammer him. He also walks way too many batters. His first year in the rotation has produced mixed results with some promise for the future. But with his underwhelming stuff, I doubt he's ever more than a 4/5 starter. Think of a poor mans Kenny Rogers.
"Hey 'Blackout,' I didn't get you for your curve ball. I don't like your curve ball. As a matter of fact, I hate your curve. You know why? Because the damn thing don't curve!"
