Broken Steering Column on Jeep Grand Cherokee

I had the same problem... there's supposed to be a snap ring that holds that bearing to the tilt mechanism (you can see the bearing in the pics in your thread over on Jeep Forum -- "broken steering column / steering wheel loose?"). I know this because mine didn't break (like yours must have, judging by the snap you heard before it started wobbling), it just jumped out of the groove. I replaced it with a hardware store snap ring for 50 cents.

I'm getting some popping noise on my front end and have yet to figure it out.
What did this sound like while on your WJ?

i think my u joint on the steering shaft is knocking on my '04 WJ jeep. Ive checked the ones i can get to but they seem fine. how hard is it to get into the column? airbag? please watch the video i have of the clunk to see what you think it may be. thanks. love your jeep BTW.

yup! it looked like you could maybe take a snap ring off the end of the column and maybe remove the shaft from the housing, and then maybe some fix for it, who knows... but i opted to just grab a new entire steering column from an 04 with low miles at the salvage yard. cost me $150, but that included a new steering wheel and airbag that i can probably sell on ebay, and clockspring and column switches that i will keep for backups since i hear that those electronics can be a common failure.
