ACL 501, the lone surviving E3A (of a two-unit order for ACL), is seen over two days pulling trains during the annual North Carolina Transportation Museum's "Rail Days" in 2005. It was by sheer default the famous locomotive, said to have racked up over six million miles running between New York City & Miami in "Champion" service until its retirement in 1970, got out on the road this particular year as advertised N&W equipment was unable to make the event in time. #501 rarely pulls trains, spending most of its time in the roundhouse or on the turntable posing.

  • someone please!!! donate a horn for that thing

  • I dunno...this video makes me sad. It's like the E3 is an old cow that's been allowed to roam a little further out into the pasture. The horn...well, it sounds like a wounded moose. This shouldn't be. This dame should be returned to the rails, pulling streamlined passenger cars and bringing smiles to the faces of everyone that sees her run! Still, I glad it hasn't been scrapped...too much of that has happened already. Nobody wants to save anything from the past any more it seems.

  • ilike theshot in thevideo wre the southern f unit and the ACL E3 met at 3:23

  • That engine is simply beautiful...

  • The F3 / F7 design was very modern / futuristic looking and still is even today. Lets get all the surviving units upgraded with new fuel efficient motors and put them back into service. OH . . . and fix that horn . . . PLEASE ! Even a Nathan 3 would be far better than that.

  • the horn made me laugh xP

  • @Raylroad72 yes.

  • Cool!! ACL and Southern! All that was needed was the SAL and FEC to show up! The south had some colorful trains..not anymore! :(

  • She sounds like she's farting. Old people, and I guess old engines, too, do that alot. LOL

  • I am glad this unit survived but it is sad, in a sort of way, that this beast is penned up like a circus animal only brought out to perform now and again. The horn sounds sick.

  • that hor is horrible

  • its just like a horn on a british train.
