@FerroUK And many thanks to you for replying, and bringing me back here to revisit this beautiful scene from one of my all-time favorite animated films. I also appreciate the mention. Be well, my friend! :D

Something that I just found out which makes the scene even more amazing to me, all credit goes to YouTube user BasementBeginnings for sharing this. Here is what they posted elsewhere about this scene:
'Kristofferson didn't cry only because Ash was being a spoiled brat to him.
He cried when Burl Ives sang the lyrics "the old woman died of the whoopin' cough" because it reminded him of his father who was ill from pneumonia.'
I love the way Ash apologises and the way Kristofferson accepts it.

ash and kristofferson make this movie complete but if kristofferson is supposed to be the perfect little angel then why when you first ever see him in the film he is wearing a Swiss army knife on his shorts???
Plans to kill them ALL !!!

Awww, Ash cheered him up :3

i think he put the train on because he felt bad for making kristofferson cry and he wanted to cheer him up :)

Aww, its like his own little way of apoligizing...

I agree.

I really take it as Ash apologizing and not being mean. If he was being mean, he would have crawled back into bed instead of watching the train with Kristofferson.
Ash turns the train on because he feels bad about making him cry. He wants to appear tough on the inside because he feels alone and different, and feels that people see his being different as a bad thing. He's a very misunderstood character and you'll see that towards the end of the movie.
