Ellie, our tiny little 5 month old girl, had an accidental litter. She delivered and began nursing her 16 babies without batting an eye. The second day she had a stroke, probably caused by encephalitis. Unable to continue nursing, and unable to move correctly, she was started on meds. This is her 24 hours later, getting lots of love from daddy.
UPDATE - 02-25-10:
Well, after an unexpectedly long and happy (if sideways) life, Ellie's many and varied adventures are over... She passed peacefully to the Bridge with help this morning at 4am. She had had another massive neurological event at some point during the day when I wasn't there, and she was trying, very hard, go find the Bridge. We helped her because whatever the event was had affected her ability to consistently draw a full breath, or to KNOW she was drawing a full breath, and she was in some panic at times. Having held a couple through panic breathing to the end, which is rarely mercifully quick, and having held her struggling for over 3 hours at that point, we decided help her.
She lived happily, and never once let her disability get in her way of food, bullying, climbing, playing, escaping, and loving. She walked, climbed, and ran sideways, and rolled out of excitement when she ate, but she dealt with it just fine. She was our little monkey.
She's at the Bridge, straightened out now, and lording it over all the other ratties there. She always was in charge...lol!
"Play hard, sweet girl."
Mine just had a stroke, he died instantly right in my own hands... im so sad i can't control how much i loved my rat.. and right before he passed he vomited severly... =(

Thanks! She's doing much better on the Prednisone. He kits are growing like weeds with the new mommy, and a couple look just like her. :)
