Steinitz destroys Zukertort in their unofficial championship match in London 1872, then goes on to the Vienna World Fair and chess congress, which is held in the middle of a cholera epidemic. At Vienna 1872 Steinitz introduces his revolutionary "positional style," which starts an "Ink War" between Steinitz and chess editor Leopold Hoffer, who accuses him of cowardice over the board. Steinitz then takes an almost nine year break from competitive chess. Whilst covering Paris 1878 as a journalist, he gets in a fist fight with Blackburne. The unofficial champ makes a heroic "comeback" by taking shared first in the great Vienna 1882 tournament- the strongest in chess history up to that point.

IMPORTANT HISTORICAL NOTE: At 9:43 the text of this video states that Zukertort was an opium user. Polish chess historian Tomaz Lissowski believes this to be untrue- Zukertort took digitalis to control a heart condition, and this may be the source of a tall tale about his "drug use."
