In Japan high school baseball is the base that baseball is recognized as the nations most popular sports event. 49 schools representing their prefecture have single elimination tournament every year in August at Koshien Stadium, located between Osaka and Kobe. The stadium is the home ground of the Hanshin Tigers, one of the most popular professional teams. Two schools represent Tokyo and Hokkaido because Tokyo is the most populous and Hokkaido is the most spacious prefectures.
Japanese kids are used to play for single elimination tournament since they are elementary school boys. It is essential to play with a spirit of never losing a game and therefore, they use much more bunts. The manager considers that it is absolutely important to lead the game always. Therefore Japanese teams are generally very strong in single elimination as they showed their dominance in World Baseball Classic.
