The country is polarized over the conversion of the private health care sector. There are alternatives for providing care for the uninsured and those with pre-existing conditions. We do not have to scrap our existing health care system to provide compassionate care for all of our citizens.

  • This is a wonderful extension on this idea. The thing that would work best to improve the health care system would be to have different types of health care systems competing against each other. It makes no sense that health care will be fixed by having a non-profit public option compete insurance companies and eventually driving them out of business. Why aren't the politicians looking at these alternatives?

  • Thank you. It is my belief that we are still the greatest nation in the world. We can come up with a plan that would be an example of our American spirit and ingenuity. I know others can expand on this basic idea and make it into something we can all support.

  • I totally agree. This was proposed to me years ago, right when Obama was elected, by a famous doctor I know. I was surprised by his proposal, but since then I have come to a similar conclusion. At a cost of $700 billion per year, Medicare is costing too much. For a fraction of that cost, a system of 5,000 mobile clinics and 1,000 new hospitals could be made to enhance the VA network and cure the number one long-term problem in the U.S. (a lack of reasonable, publicly-accessible, medical care).

  • Bravo, very good idea.

I wonder if you see a further expansion of this down the road would be the VHA selling services to the public billing their insurance or for cash and become a large medical provider that would push for better competition with providers along with the supply side?

  • one more thing. Your idea of using the VHA is awesome. I had thought about using the medicare/medicaid system.

  • Good stuff! I have been thinking about how both ideas from democrats and republicans will not work and how we need to come up with a very innovative way to tackle this problem. You, sir, have done it!
