Bomba is one of the traditional genres of Puerto Rica music. It originated in the coastal areas at the sugar cane haciendas. It was the music the African slaves enjoyed on Sundays. Bomba passed through generations until today. In Bomba dance is a conversation and challenge between the dancer and the primary drummer. Unlike many common dances, in Bomba the dancer dictates how the drum will play and not the other way around.
Angel Luis Reyes & Román 'Ito' Carrillo often come to Seattle to teach Bomba. In this particular occasion, they were joined by others from Puerto Rico: 'Papo Cadena', Elsie, Toby Borrero & Hadji Cepeda.
Bomba efforts are organized by Dr. Sharon Cronin, of Jamaican roots, who has high regard & love for Puerto Rican Bomba. Sharon is the Director of local Bomba group called Grupo Bayano.
The first song is from a different genre, Plena, from Puerto Rico.
