Butch Goring goal vs Boston (1983 Semi Final, Game 6)

Butch Goring scores on Boston in Game 6 of the 1983 Conference Final at the Nassau Coliseum. Goring does a number on future Hall of Famer, Ray Bourque, and goalie Pete Peters, as his goal gives the New York Islanders a 1-0 lead. The Islanders went on to win the game 8-4 and clinch a birth into the Stanley Cup Final against Edmonton, and eventually their 4th consecutive Stanley Cup.

I cannot understand why Butch (also Tonelli and Nystrom) is not in the HoF. All were much better 2 way players than the bigger, defensive Gainey (on my beloved Habs), and all had better numbers (in fewer games).

Butch is considered the missing piece to the Isles Cup hopes. Bob is an alltime clutch playoff man, especially in overtime.

All were smaller than Gainey and did the same job he did while being better offensively. There is no way any of them should be left out of the HoF.

Two reasons.

1) The Isles gave up two solid players to get one in return.

2) After playing in the league since 1969, the Kings and others felt Butch was past his prime.

How wrong they were.

My dad says this goal broke the backs of the Bruins in the series. Considering they lost 8-4, I wouldn't doubt it

Butch Goring was one of my favorite players. He was such a pest to the other teams with his RELENTLESS forechecking. I felt he was truly inspirational to the other team members.

@dzanier By 1980, Harris and Dave Lewis were done. Both of them had gotten slower than they already were. Lewis was a stay at home defencemen who pretty much became a weak link in playoff upsets vs the Rangers in 1979 and the Leafs in 1978. Harris was easily pushed around and was nowhere near as tenacious as Goring. Simply put, they could not perform in the playoffs, they had become passengers who could be replaced among all the young prospects the Islanders had in their system.

@goalscr12 You do realize that Bourque was easily playing 24-25 minutes a game and sometimes 30 minutes a game. The 2 goals you mention are goals scored late in games. This was a 3rd period goal and Brad May's was in OT. For all these youtube videos which show him getting deked late in shifts or late in games, imagine the countless other defensive plays that he made that people don't bother putting on youtube because they were ordinary by his standard. He was no Bobby Orr, but he was excellent.

@ULTRAPOWER1977Habs Who was a better dynasty?There wasn't many of them.You had the Canadiens,then the Oilers,and basically after that the only one that comes close to those 3 are the Red Wings.The Red Wings also had a dynasty back from 1935-1955.It was spaced out but in that time frame they did win 7.But look at what the Islanders did back then.Only Montreal has done 4 in a row,and they did 5 in a row.And when the Islanders did it there were more teams too.
