This is my little Lidmotor SSG charging and running a CFL light. The ignition coil for the modified CFL is placed in series with the negative line to the charge battery of the SSG.

  • A cfl can act as a diode too, Correct?

  • A CFL acting like a diode? I don't know.

The ones that I am using have been gutted. There is no internal circuit. I am just using the gas filled tube. The high voltage is discharging through the tube in a linear shock wave. It may act as a diode. I just don't know. I do know that in this particular circuit if you don't let the discharge happen the SSG does not like it. It makes a terrible sound an almost stops.

  • awsome!

  • Serversysadm---Awesome is right. More like OUCH some! If you build this be careful of the high voltage at the ignition coil. It bites.

  • You are right. My modified gutted CFLs run either direction. No diodes here.

  • The CFL cannot act like a diode. Vacuum tubes are not the same as CFLs at all. Vacuum tubes make use of various control grids placed in the path of the stream of electrons to act like diodes and amplifiers and switches. CFLs have no control grids and conduct electricity in both directions.

  • The first diodes were vacuum tubes and as far as I know fluorescent lightbulbs are constructed in the same way. The mercury vapor sends off U.V. rays which then reacts with the phosphor coating and illuminates it(visual light). It's like a T.V. and an electron gun. Any way Valves or tubes conduct in a certain direction. Cool vid!

  • I have worked with high voltage quite a bit. also I have done alot of experiments with the newman motor to try and find out how back emf actualy works. I want to learn enough to build a charging system for all my electronic/lighting/transportation,projects.
