Poor old Don. My Dad was the last man to sail with him. I remember answering the door when he came round our flat.

One of the saddest and most poignant documentaries I've ever seen. Brilliant.

I agree with you man but I voted your comment down because it spoils the documentary for those who haven't seen it and are unaware of the story.

story is quite simple,i havent read a book but the movie makes sense and it was done with a sense of dignity.don obviosly was a man with poor financial background, family man.he wanted to do this but he obviosly wasnt up to the challenge an naturally things went wrong.but you got to respect this man his weakness, courage and painful destiny.i found my self much in this movie.

@mrnice866 I have no sympathy for Crowhurst.. He caused Nigel Tetley to sink his boat when Tetley would otherwise have won the fastest passage. Sadly tetley was dead within a year or two .

I remember well an episode of Shoestring where they used a similar plot story

I agree, the tone of the documentary is all wrong
I was profoundly moved by this film. Following my viewing of Deep Water I was left thinking that we all have Donald Crowhurst-like qualities. There are the majestic stories of men the likes of Ernest Shackleton, Edmund Hillary, Joshua Slocum, et al. But society a needs a perspective and an understanding of the other list or the millions of others who have failed in their pursuits. Deep Water sheds this light.

I will strongly disagree with the last posting.
This man put himself in a very difficult situation, and this cannot be denied.
Facing ridicule, bankrupcy and expropriation, he had too great a sense of honour to go home as a cheat, and had the courage, not cowardness, to decide to take his own life rather than to fake it.
A man who dared to go to the end of the world and back for his family.
A true gentleman, who put himself in an awful situation, and faced the price he chose to pay.
