Formerly called the CHICKENSHACK project, the results of the design seemed to call for a more contemporary, straightforward title. No chickens here. Just ideas, born in a 7x7 shed purchased at Walmart for 700.00! That and a little carpentry brought the concept to life.

The Shed is the brainchild of composer, keyboardist and producer Chris Schulze, known mostly for his scoring of Hawaii's number one sports television series, Hawaii Skin Diver.

It was designed on his property to eliminate the cost of leasing studio property, and to isolate the electronics from the salt and moisture of the outside atmosphere. It is a soundproof design that was almost perfected at first attempt.

The Shed is to music studios what the i-Phone is to micro-technological breakthroughs; a stealth array of high-tech features packaged neatly into a portable, ergonomic outer casing.

Even the recording desk was thought up just for this studio, and the idea was custom built into a reality by Gordon Lee, owner of Ho'okupu Woodworks.

Since it's completion, the studio has seen projects ranging from television scores to full-length CD projects. Don't let it's size fool you into thinking size is too prohibitive to produce other instrument tracks.

The Shed can record your guitar track and vocals, and can literally lay out a whole background music bed consisting of every musical instrument you need on it without adding the expense of session players. Need a session guitar player? No problem. Don't have a session drummer? Gotcha covered. The instrumental technology and sampling deployed by the Shed, along with Protools Beat Detective, Elastic, and Spectrasonics Groove Locking technology makes any beat or lick possible to produce, providing vocalists in the end a soundbed custom tailored to their songs!

This particular video offers a mere sampling of the music that comes out of the Shed, along with a glimpse into one morning in the life of a composer, when he wakes up in with a melody brewing in his mind, and records it into reality. Guest starring Basha the dog. (more) (less)

  • I'm loving this idea! One quick question... How are you powering the studio?

  • @twinnsoniq Thanks Twinsoniq sorry took me so long to answer - I drilled a hole through the corner of the floor and fed a 10 gauge, 3-way outlet through it On the outside, I plugged the male side into a 50 ft, 10 gauge ext cord. Inside, I plugged surge protected multi outlets into the female side and ran my power that way. The key is, you want to use a extension cord rated to handle a large power load, which in this case, is the 10 gauge as it's industrial size. Hope that helps!

  • This is awesome, great set up, and great music. me n my buddy are going to try and attempt to make a studio in his shed also. Any tips you can offer us? thanks

  • Thanks very much for the kind comment! I think slow and easy does it, figure out what it is you're trying to achieve design wise and consult with people regarding each aspect of the construction. That's always the best way when you're getting into something new. Best!

  • Great Video! I thought about putting my studio in the upstairs of an outside garage.

  • Thanks, and GO FOR IT!!!

  • Nice beach, chilled song, well done & thanks for uploading

  • I love your set up...! Intimate, inspiring and...great if you do not have space for your studio in ur own house. You also gotta love those M-audio BX5a monitors. I have the same ones like yours and for the price they're are more than amazing. I want to congratulate you on being the owner of that Triton Extreme, which is an incredible workstation even by today's standards. I got a taste of the Triton series via the Korg Micro X with its Triton Classic sounds so I KNOW you're a blessed man! Cheers

  • @emusicmotion Yeah, That answered my question perfectly. I really need some space away from the family to create my music Since, I don't have a garage... the shed idea is ideal for me. I've been searching all over the net to find out has anyone done this. So, when I came across your video... That gave me all of the motivation I needed to make a move. Thanks Again!

  • I like this little song mate it's really relaxing, sounds like something don henley would have dished out early 90's really nice, real sun set grill kinda stuff.

  • Awesome composition ... I have seen some sheds in my time but this is fantastic !!

  • I like your studio. You made a big thing in a small space. A place to create is important. A workshop for your mind.
