Having frets is absolutely essential to getting that slap sound. You can slap on a fretless, but it's not going to sound nearly as crisp; in fact it's gonna sound pretty dead.
The only person I have EVER seen get a decent slap sound out of a fretless is Michael Manring, and he's a freak of nature with a custom made $9,000 bass. And when I say custom made, I mean him and Zon Guitars literally designed a brand new kind of instrument JUST for him. Search "Michael Manring Hyper Bass"

@borntohula94 I don´t think that a Fretless Bass is the best to do slapping.
Without Frets you cannot get this punch........The highest Fret is doing the tone....
