On August 1st, 1943, an armada of B-24Ds, flying at tree top level to avoid radar detection, attacked the immense oil fields of Ploesti, Romania. This was codenamed "Operation Tidal Wave". These oil fields supplied Germany with large amounts of oil, therefore attacking it would cut fuel for German planes and other German vehicles. Ploesti was one of the most costly raids of WWII. Pictured here are actual photos, paintings, ads, and representations of the B-24Ds and the attack.

The soundtrack is "Big Boy" Ray McKinley & His Orchestra with Imogene Lynn from 1943, the year of the Ploesti Raid.

  • Are Those Liberators?

Any Ways, nice Job, catchy music.

  • Thanks! Yes, these are B-24D Liberators, which was the model before the swiveling nose turret B-24. That was the B-24J and B-24H models. I'll do a tribute on those models soon.

  • My uncle', whom I am named after, was a navigator on a B-24 that was so severely damaged in this raid that it coudn't make the return flight. The crew bailed out...except for my uncle, who was too drunk to find his parachute. By the time he finally got it on and jumped, the plane was over Allied lines.

The rest of the crew was captured by the Germans.

  • my gramps got shot down on this mission...he lived.....thank god or i wouldnt be here

  • Fuck USA,Ploiesti is my town!

  • My compliments on choosing the Ray McKinley Orchestra and my cousin Imogene Lynn singing "Big Boy" as your background music. You can see Imogne in person by doing a YouTube search for Imogene Lynn - Big Boy. Thanks.

  • @1976198220 dude wtf is your problem?

  • @pilotso wow cool

  • My teacher's Dad flew in that mission and his B-24 survived and landed his B-24.

  • This aircraft did a great job for R.A.F. Coastal Command sub hunting.

  • There was a catwalk, a narrow metal plank about 10" wide across the bomb-bay doors, longitudinally front to back. To get from the front of the plane to the back, one needed to walk the catwalk. The bay doors were thin and could only support 100 lbs, for safety to let bombs drop through in emergency. If a man fell off the catwalk, he'd die.

My late Dad, in the 98th, said the Lib was the best plane ever made, cause it always got him home. Knocking on a wooden .50 ammo box, he was lucky. Thanks!

  • ploestri oilfield is the most defenced oilfield in europe alot of brave american soul has been ost there
