  • This is great footage. I wish some of the younger posters here would realise that even the British press at the time gave respect to the Germany navy and Admiral Ciliax in particular for this bold move. There were brave men on both sides and this manouver has NOTHING to do with the Holocaust so don't bring that topic into naval history.

  • I hate the venom that is sprayed out in some of these comments. This video like most of these are documents in history, and fascinating. They were all good young men on both sides doing what they were told. Just admire the ships. The Germans always considered the Sharnhorst and her sister as Battleships not Battlecruisers. The allies called the battlecruisers because of their smaller calibre guns (11") but the germans always had the intention of replacing them with 15" guns (possibly 6)

  • @JuergenGDB quote yourself, assclown.

  • @fluffy1931 Again... you seem like a hack to come on after a year of posting, to say some meaningless facts.. anyone can look up in wikepedia to get correct dates, it has nothing to do with the fact of your original post. Who gives a rats ass on the nit picking, the war is long over, and Germany kicked more ass then the allies combined... so quote me on that, do some research on that you ficking hack. If you want I will pick up all my books and recite them back to you.. GFY!

  • @JuergenGDB "By the way Russia did not invade Poland at the Time Germany invaded, only when the Polish were defeated at their capital, the Soviets launched an all out attack.",..your quote again dude.

Clearly the poles were not defeated on Sept 17' when the Red Army invaded Poland.

The Polish capital Warsaw fell on Sept 27' ten days after the Red Army invaded Poland.

Do you read your own posts?

Your entitled to your own opinions not your own facts.

    gtfoh

  • @fluffy1931 And so again what is your point.. most of Polands combat units were already committed and encircled by the time the red army launched its attacks, Germany also knew when they would launch them.. again I hardly see the point you are trying to make.

  • @JuergenGDB ..,"Since I was a boy I was always amazed at how such a small country like Germany, could take on half the planet by themself. " And this is your still your quote, dude.

On Sept 17 the Red Army invaded eastern Poland, and occupied the Polish territory assigned to it by the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact.

On Sept 27' the Polish capital Warsaw fell.

    pls gtfoh.

  • @fluffy1931 Whats your point... I have studied WWII for over 30 years I think I know this already. Oh you think that Italy contributed in Germany's war effort? Or Japan assisted Germany in some way? The only thing all of those small countries did was add a small amount of manpower for Germany. By the way Russia did not invade Poland at the Time Germany invaded, only when the Polish were defeated at their capital, the Soviets launched an all out attack.

  • @JuergenGDB Germany was part of the Axis powers which included Italy, Japan, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Axis powers Co-belligerents were Finland, Iraq, Thailand.

German puppet regimes included Slovakia, Albania, Serbia, Vardar Macedonia.

Joint German-Italian puppet states - Pindus and Macedonia, Croatia, Greece.

    Axis collaborator states Vichy France.

Germany & Soviet Union both in military alliance Ribbentropp-Molotov-Pact 1939' invaded Poland together 'BFF'. pls gtfoh

  • Fantastic footage, just a shame to see the downed allied aircraft at the end. One can only hope the crew were safe.....

  • This 'Channel Dash' was the last time these two impressive ships were at sea together. Gneisenau, bombed to destruction by t R.A.F., Scharnhorst ,blown to blazes,at battle of North Cape, when it met one of its own kind,HMS Duke of York. only a handful od survivors. These 2 ships had a degree of success as commerce raiders, and sank HMS Glorious,a old carrier(commanded by a incompetent),and its two Escorting Destroyers,HMS Ardent, HMS Acasta, major loss of life, only one man surviving from escort.

  • A sleek operation by the German navy but ultimately, an admission that their surface forces, and perhaps surface capital ships period, were pretty much useless the Atlantic as an offensive weapon. Only the U-boats could do damage from 1941 onwards in the big open Atlantic, although in the Baltic, the German navy ruled even when the armies had retreated west
