That's why many directors use the Super 35 or Open Matte format to avoid that sacrifice of image information.

i noticed the bigger the more of a blockbuster hit the movie the wider the aspect ratio. like independence day or the matrix @ 2:35. compared to movies that werent expected to be as major are in 16:9.

Panned and scanned butches the integrity of the filmmaker’s original intent.
I like black bars top and bottom narrow for W/S when looking at the 35mm you see thicker rack lines top and bottom. With scope you see thinner rack lines top and bottom yet on TV they’re shown as thicker black bars top and bottom, it doesn’t bother me at all.
Its logical to have it in SCOPE 2.35:1 or blow-up for 70mm to hold 6track DOLBY STEREO® SR

I just bought a 16:9 SD camcorder and it's way better than 4:3 format. It looks more professional too! :)

Strangely enough, Leonard Nimoy shot his next film (Three Men and a Baby) in 1.85:1.

He probably wanted to shoot in 2.35:1 but was over ruled because it's more expensive to shoot in 2.35:1
The only 2 movie he directed that were in 2.35:1 were Star Trek III and IV
He did not direct many movie but he does to a lot of still photography.
