(Continued)Galveston Island was a very low-lying island, what geologists call a barrier island. There were no man-made structures to try to stop storm surge. After the hurricane the city built a seawall that was 17' from base to top, then began a grade raising project that is still 1 of the most remarkable civil engineering projects in U.S. history.I've written a very large collection of Galveston Island-related songs, a few of which are about 1900,1961,2008 hurricanes & the grade raising

Thanks for posting for posting this rendition. You asked if a
Texan could tell you more about the storm.I was born on
Galveston Island at the beginning of the '50s.The song is
about the hurricane that devastated Galveston Island in 1900,
killing between 6,000 to 8,000.It is,by far,the deadliest natural
disaster in U.S. history.I knew survivors & listened to their
eyewitness accounts. The song makes a big factual error by
saying Galveston had a seawall when the hurricane struck.

You know there should be a lot on the internet about the Galveston storm. It destroyed the island buildings and killed a lot of people. They said that it washed up the caskets and long dead bodies and caskets were floating through the streets.

isaac's storm......isaac cline was the galveston meteorologist who woefully under-forecasted the strength of the storm. as a result, lots of folks stayed on the island despite the gathering tempest and perished.

8,000 ppl died and 3,600 bldgs were completely destroyed. After the storm, the level of the island was raised 17 feet - get this - by sucking sand off the ocean floor and spraying it over the entire island. They also built the 17ft-high seawall, which has saved the island from massive hurricane damage since then. But today, for the first time (and the first time in my 54 years), the seawall has already been breeched and the storm is still 200 miles offshore. The island will be destroyed again.

this is my favorite song that he did i have alot of his cd's great job
Hello dogtagz01. I also adore J.E. and Wade. This song on the clip sounds authentic from the '30's. Is that so, do you know, or is it one of those tunes which were re-recorded by J.E. and his adult children in the early / mid '60's ? Either way, I don't really mind, it's STILL a great track ; it has that signature J.E. sound and that BEAT. Man, that ole J.E. BEAT is somethin' else, isn't it !
