The Jackson 5 performed Darling Dear on their third album (The Third Album). James Jamerson played bass on this selection with a style and fluency seldom heard in common hours. The bassline is so soulful and beautiful that many musicians speak of having "sung" the bassline instead of the equally great lead vocal line delivered by the gifted and prodigious Michael Jackson. The bassline would qualify as a "wonder of the world" since it is such a bold departure from anything heard at that time, or since. James Jamerson is arguably the greatest bass player to ever live. He played on more number 1 hit records than any other bassist, or musician in the history of popular music. He died a bitter and brokenhearted man since he was neither adequately compensated or recognized for his immeasurable contributions to the spirit and practice of bass playing.

Really good comment! I think of many Jamerson bass lines are like skipping through a field in the midddle of summer, or all the sensations of being in a fairground. That's what James Jamersons music means to me. Seems silly to try and explain it in this way but everyone has their own personal interpretation.
I learned that bassline and all the others of the J5. They are harder than any of MJ's basslines! Jamerson ruled and was a genius. all the players I emulated played Motown. Gospel RnB Jazz all are contained there and groove is the foundation!- Fc
I had to contain myself during a Motown Museum tour. The silly brother conducting the tour did more entertaining than telling the 'true' history. While in the famed 'Studio A' I brought up and rightfully so, THE FUNK BROTHERS. He wasn't even going to mention them. Finally, I "mean mugged" him to the point where he began talking about the greatest hit making machine of all time. I'm going back on the museum website and continue to petition for proper recognition of the FUNK BROTHERS.
im learning this song right now, its mostly in chromatic steps for the most part, which is why it sounds very busy within the key. very very grooving though, i heard this when i first started playing bass and didnt think it was very "pretty". shows how much ive grown
I have always wanted to hear this song. I've only heard dj spinner use parts of the song as a sample but I never heard the whole song. Always wanted to know what jackson 5 song he used and now I know..Its a really nice track 2
Jamerson influenced a whole generation of bassists. He helped bring the instrument to the forefront in pop music. And this bass line is simply incredible. I mean it floors me to listen to it.
