Dear Planet Earth: I have used the lyrics of Coldplays The Scientist as the body of a letter to the planet from mankind discussing the intricate relationship between the two entities which at one time were fundamentally connected. Throughout human history, however, mankind has grown ever more disconnected from the planet. This has resulted in a state of human exceptionalism that seems, for many people, to justify ecological disasters like ozone depletion, deforestation, e-waste, industrial agriculture, mass-production of animals for consumption, and climate change. It seems that the solutions to such complex issues will, ironically, bring us back to the start. Alternative energy sources such as windmills, solar panels, wave technology, and geothermal all rely on human connection with the earths natural production of power. Our consumption habits must also take a step back in time, to an era before todays consumerist mindset of short-term ownership of goods and disposal. In order to regain a balance in the relationship between people and the earth, one must live more closely in tune with what the earth provides. A person whose living spaces are powered by earths natural renewable energy sources and whose body is powered only by what the earth readily provides (such as non-genetically modified foods, organic products, and less meat and dairy) would live in sync with the earth. This lifestyle would occupy a small enough ecological footprint for, if all people followed, a harmonic co-existence between people and the planet. This letter expresses the way in which humankind has distanced itself from the planet but also the hope that, as we move towards a more sustainable society, the planet and its people will once again connect.
